Barbara Stover.jpg

"I started my sewing career as a young girl, sewing t-shirts for the teddy bear, and continued to work in a dry goods section of a department store during high school where I learned a lot about fabric and yarn. My college education netted a degree in Home Economics, and I taught cooking and sewing for 10 years. In the 1990’s I began quilting as if my life depended on it. My passion in quilting is using circular forms and beads to create intricate mandalas. Currently, living in central Ohio, I enjoy knitting and quilting."

"My first sewing projects were appliques for my blue jeans back in the 1970‘s; now my passions are quilting, cloth book making and gravel bike racing. I’ve entered the Hoffman Challenge a whopping 21 times beginning in 1996! Twelve of my entries have won awards. I get a huge amount of inspiration from doing the challenge and seeing all the other entries. My husband and I live in a log house near Nederland, Colorado with our dog and a retired racing donkey, and we have two grown kids.”

EXPLODING STAR
by Karla Seyb-Stockton

Escondido, CA
Karla Seyb-Stockton.jpg

”I learned to sew my first year in 4-H when I was 9 years old. When I was a senior in high school, I was given one of the quilts my grandmother (who died when I was 5) had made. I decided I wanted to learn how to do that so in my college town I found a church with a quilters group and arranged my classes to be free when they met. I learned to quilt from a bunch of substitute grandmas who were thrilled to have a young person quilt with them.
In the quilting world, my first love is working by hand; appliqué, English paper piecing, even old-fashioned hand piecing, but mostly I love working with shapes and colors turning them into beautiful things"

"I’ve enjoyed being a ‘quilter’ for 22 years.  I started out making functional bed, lap, and baby quilts while learning this wonderful and valuable skill.  Quilting became my artistic passion after entering my first show and competition wall quilt in 2004.  The annual Hoffman Challenge has been something I’ve enjoyed participating in for 16 years now.  A “thank you” to Hoffman, International for providing this fun outlet for quilters all around the world.

"My name is Patti Kupferer and I live in the southwest, in Mesa, Arizona. My mother taught me how to sew when I was 9 years old using the lining from discarded drapes as fabric. Watching Georgia Bonesteel on TV in the 80s inspired my first quilt. My current passion is experimenting with improv and raw-edge applique."

Cherri Kincaid.jpg

"I started sewing in school, but already had a little knowledge since my mother sewed most of my clothes.  I took over making my own clothes but really wanted to explore other creative options.

In that search I made a few basic quilts, but when I found an embroidery machine I fell in love.  My mother did a lot of hand embroidery which I loved but didn't have the patience for, so the embroidery machine was the answer.  I feel the most creative when combining my love of embroidery and sewing into projects that contain both."

"My name is Gail and I live in Plymouth, MA. I started quilting 17 years ago when one of my sons was getting married. I wanted to give them a very special gift and decided on a quilt. I found an instructor and group and have not looked back. I play tennis, golf and belong to 3 quilting guilds. My passion, however, is my job as grandma. My granddaughter has made 3 quilts. The time we have spent together and teaching her the "old ways" is very special to me."

"I recently retired from a long career as a graphic artist. I started sewing when I was 11 years old, designing and hand-sewing clothes for my dolls. I took machine sewing lessons when I was 13 and very quickly fell in love with making garments. I ventured into quilting while in college. My passion lies in combining my love of quilting, garment making, and graphic art to create one-of-a-kind pieces. I have been a fan of the Hoffman Challenge for many years and finally took the leap with the 2017-2018 "Shine On'' challenge. I am always amazed at how all the finalists have interpreted the challenge criteria."
